Rote Learning and Semantic ClusteringAnalysis of Free Recall Test Data from PeruPonoma College
Ponoma College A one-trial free recall test was administered to 27 children in a Quechua-speaking community in the highlands of Canchis Province, Peru. The responses were used to assess hypotheses that rote memorization processes and semantic clustering are employed by these subjects to recall words. Presentation-recall order correlations, distances on the presentation list of items recalled adjacently, "recall" of items not presented, and a matrix of distances between words for all pairs of words are discussed. The results indicate that rote processing and semantic clustering are used by these subjects. Sex differences in patterns of response are also explored, and suggestions are made concerning future directions which might be followed in designing free recall tests for cross-cultural research.
