Application of the D 48 Test of General Intellectual Ability in Turkey

Cigdem Kagit(;Iba;I

Department of Social Sciences, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey

The D 48 test was given to 100 6th and 7th grade students in Turkey. The results showed that: (a) the test had high predictive validity in Turkey, with school achievement over three years used as the criterion; (b) Turkish sigmas were similar to those obtained from similar age groups in other countries whereas Turkish means were lower, due probably to a lack of test sophistication; (c) test item difficulties were rather constant for different age groups and for testing in different countries. The advantages of the D 48 were discussed, namely, its high saturation with "g, " its easy administration and scoring, its non-verbal nature and its cross-cultural applicability due to the fact that by using widely known stimuli, it attempts to equalize experience.
